History & Description
The current Sable Island East End Lighthouse (East End III, built c.1965) is a square skeleton tower still standing on Sable Island. It was deactivated in 2012. The original 1873 tower (East End I) it replaced was 81 feet tall; the current tower is 59 feet. Historical information about earlier structures follows below.
Sable Island East End I was established in 1873 as an octagonal wooden tower standing 81 feet tall, one of two lights built to mark the treacherous sand bar at the eastern tip of Sable Island. The remote, crescent-shaped Sable Island is famed for its wild horses, shifting dunes, and centuries of shipwrecks along the Atlantic. The original East End tower was replaced by successive structures as the shifting sands and harsh marine environment took their toll, leading to the current East End III, an automated skeleton tower deactivated in 2012. The tower remains standing but its light no longer guides mariners.
