History & Description
Three Top Island Lighthouse was established in 1879 on Three Top Island, located a mile northwest of White Head Island at the entrance to Whitehaven Harbour on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. The first light was a square wooden tower 32 feet high with a keeper's dwelling attached, built by Thomas O'Neil of Salmon River for $1,097 and first lit in September 1879. It displayed a fixed white catoptric light 48 feet above the water to guide vessels into the harbour, and William L. Munroe served as its first keeper.
A second lighthouse was built on the island in 1927 in the form of a square two-storey dwelling with a lantern room centered atop its roof, a style used at many Nova Scotia stations in the early 1900s. The first tower was then stripped of its lantern room and converted into a storehouse. The Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society records that the second lighthouse was replaced by a skeletal tower between 1970 and 1973, and the station was automated around that time.
Neither of the historic Three Top Island lighthouses survives today, and only the skeletal tower remains on the site, displaying a flashing green light that was still active as of 2020. The island sits along the Marine Drive off Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore, and the modern light is best viewed from the water.
