About Fête de Saint-Louis

The Fête de Saint-Louis is a traditional feast day celebrated each summer at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, where visitors eat, drink, and make merry in honour of Saint Louis, the patron saint of France. Held on August 25 inside the reconstructed 18th-century French colonial town, the festivities run from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM and bring the fortress's French heritage vividly to life.

The setting is extraordinary: a partial reconstruction of the 1740s fortified town on Cape Breton's Atlantic shore, complete with costumed guides, richly furnished buildings, and the sights and aromas of a working colonial port. On a feast day, the fortress leans into its French roots, inviting visitors to sample period-inspired food and drink while exploring the streets, bastions, and King's Bastion that once made Louisbourg one of the busiest harbours in New France.

Admission to the Fête de Saint-Louis is included with the regular fortress entry fee — and thanks to the Canada Strong Pass, Parks Canada is offering free admission from June 19 to September 7, 2026, making the celebration one of the most accessible ways to experience Louisbourg. Pair the visit with the fortress's other summer programming, from firing a cannon to walking the coastal trails, for a full day of history on one of Atlantic Canada's most iconic sites.

Make the most of your time in Cape Breton Island - pair Fête de Saint-Louis with our Cabot Trail Fall Colors guide, Family Travel Guide, and puffin-watching guide. They're each packed with itinerary ideas, local tips, and everything you need to extend your stay.
