Quick Facts
History & Description
Gull Rock Lighthouse stands on a wave-swept islet that marks a dangerous bank of ledges and rocks guarding the entrance to Lockeport Harbour on Nova Scotia's South Shore, along the Lighthouse Route. The original lighthouse, a square pyramidal tower with a dwelling in its lower portion, was completed in 1853, but after nearly a century of service it had deteriorated beyond economical repair.
A new two-storey lighthouse was built on Gull Rock in 1948 to replace the original tower, providing far more living space as a white rectangular building about 44 feet (13 m) high with a square tower rising above its pitched roof. The station was automated and de-staffed in 1987, after which the fog-alarm building, workshop, and boathouse were removed and two skeletal towers were installed nearby to carry the light and foghorn.
The 1948 lighthouse still stands today, although it is reported to be endangered as its concrete cladding deteriorates and exposes the interior brick, and a community group has formed to try to save it. The active light now operates from the skeletal towers rather than the historic building. The closest land-based views are from the end of Western Head Road near Lockeport, reached by a short walking trail.
