Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl

Every February, Nova Scotia's South Shore transforms into a month-long celebration of its most iconic crustacean. The Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl stretches from Barrington — the self-proclaimed Lobster Capital of Canada — to Peggy's Cove, with 100+ lobster experiences across dozens of coastal communities. February is peak lobster season on the South Shore, making it the perfect time to indulge in the freshest catches imaginable while exploring one of Canada's most scenic coastlines in its quietest, most authentic season.

The festival's signature events are legendary. The Lobster Roll Off pits South Shore restaurants against each other in a battle for the best lobster roll, while the Lobster Chowder Chowdown Showdown crowns the region's finest chowder maker. Lucy the Lobster makes her annual appearance on February 2nd, the Lobster Treasure Hunt sends participants on a coastal quest, and the Tail End Reception closes out the month with celebration. Beyond the marquee events, participating restaurants, breweries, and experiences offer special lobster-themed menus, tastings, and packages throughout February.

What makes the Lobster Crawl special is the intimacy of a South Shore winter. Without the summer crowds, you'll have Lunenburg's colourful streets, Mahone Bay's three churches, and the rugged shoreline near Peggy's Cove largely to yourself. The festival is organized by the South Shore Tourism Cooperative and has grown every year since its debut in 2018 — the 2027 edition marks the 10th annual celebration. Most events are free or low-cost, and festival packages combine accommodation with curated lobster experiences for a complete winter getaway.

Getting there: The South Shore is about 90 minutes from Halifax along the scenic Lighthouse Route (Highway 3/Highway 103). Barrington is at the southwestern end (about 3 hours from Halifax), while Peggy's Cove is just 45 minutes from the city. Plan to base yourself in Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, or Bridgewater for central access to festival events. The CAT Ferry from Portland, Maine arrives in Yarmouth, putting you near the southwestern festival anchor.
